- I'm currently trying to identify the various ways that the LAN Device
- Drivers on AIX are utilized. These questions apply to Token Ring,
- Ethernet and FDDI. The device drivers were designed to allow for
- interfacing at both the kernel and process level. A user application
- can access the drivers through standard unix character device system
- calls. So here are the questions.

- 1. Do you run a standard protocol stack over the device,
- ie. TCP/IP.

- 2. Do you have applications that interface with the device
- driver from user space? Uses standard open,close, read
- write system calls that go through the dev switch table.

- 3. Do you have applications that interface with the device
- driver from kernel space. Provides function addresses to
- the driver to bypass the dev switch table.

- 4. If you do 1 and (2 or 3), do these applications run at the
- same time.

- I would appreciate hearing from you on the above. To be responsive to
- customers it helps to understand how our software is actually used.
