- I am using the tabular environment to create a table.
- Some of the table headings need extra explanation which
- I will put as a footnote. To avoid confusion I want the
- footnote mark to be a letter rather than a number.

- Tabular environment seems to throw up on a simple footnote
- command .. which would normally produce a letter footnote mark,
- so I tried \footnotemark and \footnotetext. Unfortunately these
- only seem to accept numbers as footnote marks. However
- tabular will accept a footnotemark instruction ..
- and the footnote text can be put outside the tabular
- environment.
