  11.     I am using the tabular environment to create a table.
  12. Some of the table headings need extra explanation which
  13. I will put as a footnote. To avoid confusion I want the
  14. footnote mark to be a letter rather than a number.

  16. Tabular environment seems to throw up on a simple footnote
  17. command .. which would normally produce a letter footnote mark,
  18. so I tried \footnotemark and \footnotetext. Unfortunately these
  19. only seem to accept numbers as footnote marks. However
  20. tabular will accept a footnotemark instruction ..
  21. and the footnote text can be put outside the tabular 
  22. environment.

  24.     Could someone suggest a way round this problem please.
