  12. of tugboat are kept online anywhere.

  14. back issues of tugboat don't, in general, exist on public archive
  15. servers, although some individual articles do.  the directory
  16. /tex/tugboat at labrea.stanford.edu and its mirrors contain what
  17. is available at present.

  19. although it has been accepted in principle by the tug board for
  20. a long time that at least articles describing macros and macro
  21. packages should be available in this way, the prospect for it
  22. actually happening is rather dim at the moment.  only limited
  23. personnel resources are available to put the files into shape
  24. for public access.  (since the beginning of 1991, the production
  25. of the regular issues has been done by the editor alone, outside
  26. of her regular paying job.)

  28. without extensive editing and testing, just placing the articles
  29. into archives in their present condition is likely to end up
  30. requiring more time answering questions than would be spent doing
  31. the job correctly.  (for example, one article in the july 1992
  32. issue required more than 15 files, and several others required
  33. metafont work.)  it is also necessary to obtain permission from
  34. authors before posting any files publicly.  a few people have
  35. volunteered to assist in doing this work, but guidelines are
  36. necessary before they can be turned loose, and the first priority,
  37. i'm afraid, is getting the current issue to the printer.

  39. at present, tugboat articles are produced using several different
  40. macro sets: the plain-based tugboat.sty; latex-based ltugboat.sty
  41. with the old conventions; ltugboat.sty on top of the new font
  42. selection scheme; ltugboat.sty with the addition of doc.sty (with
  43. or without the nfss).  articles with postscript inclusions usually
  44. use epsf.sty, and the output is generated using dvips.  occasional
  45. articles are also accepted directly as .dvi files, or provided as
  46. camera copy; it is unlikely that these will be reprocessed for
  47. installation on archives.  the processing method for particular
  48. articles can usually be determined by looking at the "production
  49. notes" for the relevant issue.

  51. a full, up-to-date bibliography of tugboat articles can be found
  52. at  math.utah.edu  in  /pub/tex/bib/tugboat.bib .  if you have
  53. an urgent need for a particular article, you may send a request
  54. to tugboat@math.ams.org ; please include a concise statement of
  55. why you require the electronic form.  (i am sorry to put conditions
  56. on this, but until the time crunch has been overcome, we can't
  57. afford to be distracted by a flood of special requests.)  we will
  58. try to acknowledge it promptly, and when possible, provide the
  59. information you are seeking.
