- I am not 100% positive about what I am about to say, but read on anyway...
- I know that earlier Tandy computers were not PC compatible. But the newer
- ones are much better. I do not know if they are 100% compatible, but they
- are certainly more compatible that their predecessors.
- The 386/sx 25 in question sounds like the 2500RSX or the 1000RSX. These
- computers have standard ISA slots, so an interface card and harddrive
- should work. Of course Tandy would recommend that you buy the parts from
- them, but they would be stupid if they forced it upon you (don't put
- anything past them).
- I have recently started working at Radio Shack, and I suggested to some
- customers that they buy a new interface card and IDE hard drive.
- I do not know how many did this, but I have not heard any responses, good
- or bad. (How many salesmen do YOU know that would turn down a sale and
- suggest that a customer buy mail order? I did. I also own a computer that
- I bought mail order.)
-
- I just realized that this posting does not say anything relevant. I am sorry.
- What I would like to say is this:
- if you want to buy a non-Tandy hard drive, make sure the vendor you buy from
- has a good return policy, in case it does not work.
- (Sorry, NO vendor is as accepting as Radio Shack when it comes to returns)
- I realize that Tandy overcharges for everything (that's why I am not doing
- so well as a salesman). But I have also realized that their hard drives are
- some of the faster ones on the market, having something to do with the
- local bus interface.
- I own two 486sx25 computers. One is a Gateway with a 120 MB Western
- Digital hard drive, and the other is a Standard with the Maxtor 130 Mb
- drive. According to Norton Utilities 6.01, the Tandy 120MB drive is
- faster than both of mine.
-
- If anybody does have any experience with non-Tandy hard drives, please let
- me know. I always try and suggest the best for my customers, even if it
- means I lose the sale.
- (I am too damn honest to be a salesman! Especially at Radio Shack).
-
- Sincerely,
- Peter
