- Or maybe it's from the right. Who can tell with these extremist views?
- :-)
-
- I feel I have to comment on Sun's purported ``Open Systems''
- advertising. From the time, a couple of years ago, when Sun announced
- that it was going to unbundle its ``good compiler'' and only provide a K&R
- compiler in the stock system, I've questioned Sun's real commitment to
- Open Systems and Standards. But I stayed my tongue -- as much for lack
- of time as for any sense of diplomacy. I even ignored Sun's continued
- attempts to promulgate Open Windows on a market that had clearly decided
- on Motif.
-
- However, recently, trying to port a POSIX and ANSI C compliant software
- system to Sun OS 4.1.1 has got me wondering just how Sun can continue to
- claim Openness and Standards with a straight face. (I really shouldn't I
- know. Politicians do the same thing all the time and voters sop it up.
- I know that I'm really quite naive to expect anything more.)
-
- I'm faced with either hacking hundreds of lines of #ifdefs into my
- software, or retreating to the old BSD ``standard,'' or just not porting
- to the Sun at all. I'd really like my software to run on Suns because
- there are so many in the marketplace, but I'm wondering just how much
- it's worth. After all, SGI and IBM are both POSIX and ANSI C compliant
- and I presume others are also or are working towards that. Even with
- Sun's huge market share, they may not be worth porting to with the number
- of other truly Open Systems available.
-
- Oh well, just wondering when Sun OS is going to go POSIX and ANSI C --
- in the stock system. If you have specific comments you want to direct to
- me, please send them via email to casey@gauss.llnl.gov -- my current job
- doesn't allow me much time on the net anymore. If there's interest, I'll
- summarize any comments I receive.
