- This is, of course, exactly the decision that every current Sun customer
- has to make. Sun has decided to force all of it's customers to Solaris 2
- if they want to keep up with their new hardware and software. Vendors
- are free to do such things. I'm sure Sun is aware that some percentage
- of their current customers won't do it, and they will loose those
- customers for future business. It's Sun's judgement that they will
- make more money with Solaris 2 than if they continue with their current
- OS. Time and the market will tell if they are right.
-
- However, you should realize that just staying with your current Sun
- hardware and software will almost certainly not be a viable long term
- strategy. It won't be very many years before all your current stuff
- looks mighty old, slow, and unmaintainable. Consider what you'd be
- running now if all your hardware/software were purchased from Sun at
- least 3 or 4 years ago.
-
- Most installations have to stay reasonably current in hardware and
- software technology. For current Sun customers, the choice is between
- going with Sun's strategy (Solaris 2), or moving to another vendor who
- provides a product which better suits the site's needs. Sun is betting
- that the pain of moving to Solaris 2 from SunOS 4 is much less than
- moving to another vendor. If they're wrong, in a few years Sun will
- be where DEC is now...in trouble.
