  19. A lot of mail received me, conerning this problem,
  20. and showed me that it's neccesary to post some clarifying notes:

  22.    1) The mentioned problem occurs with machines
  23.       byed before end of 1991. All machines we byed after then
  24.       don't show this problem, or the effect has ceased
  25.       in such a manner that we would'nt call it a violation.
  26.  
  27.    2) At this time we have buyed mostly SS1 and SLCs
  28.       (about 250).  But we have also a IPC II machine buyed 1.Sep.
  29.       1991 which shows this problem also. But we have only
  30.       a few machines of this type.
  31.       Other machine types may show the same behaviour, but
  32.       I cannot tell, since we don't have them.

  34.    3) Since then we haven't buyed more sun's. :-)
  35.       But not for that reason, but the snake were coming up.

  37. Then some more technical details. (I mailed some of this stuff
  38. already to some of you)

  40.    1) We use thick ethernet.
  41.    2) We measure the signal on the transmit-line of the AUI
  42.       cable when the receive-line is active.
  43.    3) This situation is described in a document of IEEE:
  44.       The CSMA/CD Access Method and Physical Layer Specification.
  45.       point 7.4.4.1
  46.    4) It is sufficient to connect a powerd on machine to the
  47.       ethernet. There is no need to run any SW on the machine.
  48.    5) If you want to see it four yourself with an Scope,
  49.       we used a 100MHz Tek-Scope (2245A) with TekProbes,
  50.       two channels, one showing the transmit-line, the other
  51.       the receive line. Measureing on an adapter (own build) put
  52.       between the tranceiver, and the AUI cable, 
  53.
