- Hi,
-
- A lot of mail received me, conerning this problem,
- and showed me that it's neccesary to post some clarifying notes:
-
- 1) The mentioned problem occurs with machines
- byed before end of 1991. All machines we byed after then
- don't show this problem, or the effect has ceased
- in such a manner that we would'nt call it a violation.
-
- 2) At this time we have buyed mostly SS1 and SLCs
- (about 250). But we have also a IPC II machine buyed 1.Sep.
- 1991 which shows this problem also. But we have only
- a few machines of this type.
- Other machine types may show the same behaviour, but
- I cannot tell, since we don't have them.
-
- 3) Since then we haven't buyed more sun's. :-)
- But not for that reason, but the snake were coming up.
-
- Then some more technical details. (I mailed some of this stuff
- already to some of you)
-
- 1) We use thick ethernet.
- 2) We measure the signal on the transmit-line of the AUI
- cable when the receive-line is active.
- 3) This situation is described in a document of IEEE:
- The CSMA/CD Access Method and Physical Layer Specification.
- point 7.4.4.1
- 4) It is sufficient to connect a powerd on machine to the
- ethernet. There is no need to run any SW on the machine.
- 5) If you want to see it four yourself with an Scope,
- we used a 100MHz Tek-Scope (2245A) with TekProbes,
- two channels, one showing the transmit-line, the other
- the receive line. Measureing on an adapter (own build) put
- between the tranceiver, and the AUI cable,
-
- Hope this clarifies the matter a little bit.
-
- Yours,
- Elmar Bartel.
