- | Just on a related subject: as part of an upgrade from
- | a 4d/35 to a R4000 Indigo, we needed to move the existing
- | operating system from an internal disk to an external
- | disk that would become the boot disk of the new Indigo.
- |
- | I had performed a similar task on a R3000 Indigo very
- | recently, with no problems. It nicely booted from
- | an external disk configured as SCSI 5. Well, what do you
- | know! **flame on** in an unabashed attempt to make
- | installing system software on non-SGI disks more difficult,
- | SGI has changed their installation procedure to ONLY allow
- | to install the system to SCSI units 0 and 1. There is no
-
- This is *completely* untrue. There were no such changes. It has
- always been difficult to use 'nonstandard' system disk addresses,
- but never impossible.
-
- | mention of it anywhere (Oh, you did not buy the system
- | preconfigured? Well, we recommended that you did... ---
- | at a 50% SGI surcharge), and the error message says:
- | "..not a root partition. Available devices are:
- | dsk0 dsk1" Once you know what this means, it is pretty
- | obvious, but we wasted a lot of time. **flame off**
-
- We have *always* booted with the miniroot kernel expecting to find root
- on dks0d1s0 (on Indigo and all other ESD systems: 20,25,30,35). You
- can override that by doing (each time you need to do boot a kernel
- expecting root on a particular device)
- >> setenv root dks0d5s1
- >> exit
- at the PROM monitor prompt, before starting the install (for a miniroot
- on SCSI drive 5, controller 0).
-
- | Anyhow, just thought I'd save some pain for those who
- | are installing their own system software and booting off
- | of non-SGI disks: use SCSI 0 or 1 only!
-
- NEVER configure a device as ID 0. That is the host adapter
- ID. The message refers to controller numbers, not drive
- numbers (Indigo was originally going to support 2 SCSI channels).
-
- After you have done this, when you configure the kernel, the
- configured kernel will have its idea of root set to drive 5,
- so you shouldn't need to worry about it again.
-
- In the future, I'd suggest asking questions, rather than
- making attacks based on inaccurate information. You are
- more likely to get help that way.
