- Just on a related subject: as part of an upgrade from
- a 4d/35 to a R4000 Indigo, we needed to move the existing
- operating system from an internal disk to an external
- disk that would become the boot disk of the new Indigo.
-
- I had performed a similar task on a R3000 Indigo very
- recently, with no problems. It nicely booted from
- an external disk configured as SCSI 5. Well, what do you
- know! **flame on** in an unabashed attempt to make
- installing system software on non-SGI disks more difficult,
- SGI has changed their installation procedure to ONLY allow
- to install the system to SCSI units 0 and 1. There is no
- mention of it anywhere (Oh, you did not buy the system
- preconfigured? Well, we recommended that you did... ---
- at a 50% SGI surcharge), and the error message says:
- "..not a root partition. Available devices are:
- dsk0 dsk1" Once you know what this means, it is pretty
- obvious, but we wasted a lot of time. **flame off**
-
- Anyhow, just thought I'd save some pain for those who
- are installing their own system software and booting off
- of non-SGI disks: use SCSI 0 or 1 only!
-
- Cheers.
