- The MIPS R3000, R4000, and R4400 (a.k.a. R4000A) are all binary
- compatible. Having some machines of each won't hurt NFS (It doesn't
- differentiate between machines [within SGI or between other manufacturers]).
- Before deciding which machines to upgrade, you should evaluate the way you use
- the machines. If your uses are mostly in the workstations (i.e. CAD, Imaging,
- etc.), then just upgrade these. However, if you use more net distributed work
- (i.e. data base work), upgrade the server, and the workstations later. Of
- course, upgrading everything is preferable, but who has the money? The data
- path won't be a big difference since your buses are still 32-bit (or possible
- some 64-bit system buses [if you upgrade the whole logic board], but the
- interface buses will still be 32-bit). Either way, you shouldn't have
- compatibility problems, but do talk to someone who has a mixed network (I
- don't) before you try it, just in case...
