- Hello,
-
- Some people here have asked me if it is possible to guarantee a certain
- amount of virtual memory for a particular user. Our problem is that
- we want to run background jobs on workstations, but avoid getting the
- X-server killed for lack of memory.
-
- I checked the kernel configuration, but that only gives some ways to
- control RSS hogs and the control of available memory.
-
- I know we can start killing processes we don't like the look of, or
- killing users when they submit such processes, but we would like a
- kinder, gentler method of ensuring some virtual memory for whoever
- is using the console. One of the problems with killing processes is
- identifying them, tty ports have lost their usefulness since separate
- xterms allocate separate tty's.
-
- The ideal solution would be if some virtual memory could be prededicated
- (as opposed to allocated) to the children of some process. This would be
- similar to reaper, which finds the children of the xdm-login even if the
- PID-chain has been broken.
-
- Any thoughts, problems (or solutions !) would be greatly appreciated.
-
- Thomas
