- Here is a summary of the responses...
-
- PHIGS was critisized for not having "immediate mode" graphics and for being
- not being very portable.
-
- HOOPS from Ithaca Software was recommended over PHIGS for its ease of use and
- reduced source code size. It was also praised for supporting lots of unix
- platforms, taking advantage of special graphics hardware, and having an
- advanced rendering package available which gives more control over lighting
- models and supports radiosity and ray tracing.

- Nth Graphics' "Nth PortableGL" supports GL on SPARCs (HP version is in "late
- beta"). According to Nth's brochure "NPGL(tm) for SPARC is compatible with
- IRIS GL 4.0 (2) from SGI", and "Nth PortableGL is available now, and it does
- not require any modifications to the application's source code. A recompiled
- SGI application will run on any standard or enhanced SPARCstation with the Nth
- PortableGL software."

- Dupont Pixel Systems offers IRIS GL support for SPARC. 1-800-542-1484.
-
- IBM supports IRIS GL on the RS/6000 (reportedly version 3.3).
-
- Next year OpenGL should be available. It has been licensed to DEC, IBM,
- Microsoft, and Nth graphics (which supports HP, SUN), Dupont Pixel
- (Supports SUN), and a host of other companies (so far 26 licensees).
-
- Thanks very much to all those who responded.
