  18. I have uncovered a strange problem on my 2.1 system. I have a user
  19. called "janet" who can send mail to other users, but cannot read
  20. mail. I have done all the usual things like checking to see that
  21. the spool file /usr/spool/mail/janet is readable. /usr/ucb/Mail
  22. works just fine for this user. Sendmail logs a good transaction when
  23. mail is send to user "janet" and the message actually appears in
  24. /usr/spool/mail/janet. I got really frustrated and backed up all
  25. of "janets" files, deleted the user "janet" and reinstalled the
  26. user "janet".

  28. Any mail sent to "janet" including the preinstalled message from Steve
  29. Jobs shows up the first time Mail is run by "janet". If the "new
  30. mail" button is pressed, you get a beep, as expected. Now, if you 
  31. delete the old mail from the Active.mbox and exit Mail, the next time
  32. you run Mail, you cannot receive mail, and if you press the "new mail"
  33. button, nothing happens. You get no beep and no new mail. If you send
  34. a message to yourself, it does not appear in the Active.mbox even 
  35. though it shows up in the /usr/spool/mail/janet file and sendmail has
  36. logged the transaction with no errors. You can see the message with
  37. /usr/ucb/Mail with no difficulty.

  39. I have deleted and reinstalled user "janet" twice and seen the same 
  40. symptoms. There are four other users on the system who can send and 
  41. receive mail without any problems. What the heck is going on here? Is 
  42. something inside Mail.app mangled?
