- Help!
-
- I have uncovered a strange problem on my 2.1 system. I have a user
- called "janet" who can send mail to other users, but cannot read
- mail. I have done all the usual things like checking to see that
- the spool file /usr/spool/mail/janet is readable. /usr/ucb/Mail
- works just fine for this user. Sendmail logs a good transaction when
- mail is send to user "janet" and the message actually appears in
- /usr/spool/mail/janet. I got really frustrated and backed up all
- of "janets" files, deleted the user "janet" and reinstalled the
- user "janet".
-
- Any mail sent to "janet" including the preinstalled message from Steve
- Jobs shows up the first time Mail is run by "janet". If the "new
- mail" button is pressed, you get a beep, as expected. Now, if you
- delete the old mail from the Active.mbox and exit Mail, the next time
- you run Mail, you cannot receive mail, and if you press the "new mail"
- button, nothing happens. You get no beep and no new mail. If you send
- a message to yourself, it does not appear in the Active.mbox even
- though it shows up in the /usr/spool/mail/janet file and sendmail has
- logged the transaction with no errors. You can see the message with
- /usr/ucb/Mail with no difficulty.
-
- I have deleted and reinstalled user "janet" twice and seen the same
- symptoms. There are four other users on the system who can send and
- receive mail without any problems. What the heck is going on here? Is
- something inside Mail.app mangled?
-
- Thanks,
-
