- Okay, I've tried dealing with it, but I've just gotten totally fed
- up and figured I'd try to find out why the heck the NeXT CD-ROM is so
- flakey. First off, this is a classic '030 NeXT Cube, with an external
- 660M Fujitsu and the 40M Quantum on the SCSI chain with the CD-ROM. The
- Fujitsu is ID #1, the CD-ROM is #4, and the Quantum is #6. That's the
- background info...
-
- Now, the problem is just that the CD-ROM a basically, to me,
- unusable. I expected slow. This I can deal with, as long as it's doing
- something. But...well, lessee, after dealing with a few odd problems,
- installing 3.0 did okay...a lot of problems but most of them were my fault,
- and after a while it got done. Well, then I decided that, mostly for
- speed-sake, I'd re-install 3.0 after reformatting the drive. Okay, no
- problem, the install goes great, but, not so easy for the extended
- packages. In fact, it basically didn't want to install them at all. I
- tried installing them direct from the CD...no go...I tried copying them
- (using WS Manager) from the CD, then installing them. Again, this didn't
- work. (okay, for information, if I remember correctly, in trying to do
- this the console reported some errors...I *believe* they had something to
- do with "timeout" errors or some such) Well, finally I got sick of this
- and just tried copying the damn things by hand...in single user mode...
- hey! This worked! I got a bunch of errors while doing it (again, I believe
- it was related to timeout) but it worked. Installed the packages, no
- problem.
-
- Okay, 3.0 installed, now what to do with the CD-ROM? Well, for one,
- if I keep the damn thing turned on, anytime I try to run an application the
- system seems to want to occupy itself for about 5 minutes doing
- God-knows-what *then* executing the application. Trying to play music CDs
- (though CDplayer) more often then not ends up with the CD stopping midsong
- somewhere and me having to restart it. *If* it doesn't decide to just
- kill CDPlayer and eject the disk. ??? Why?
-
- Well, luckily, however, I can just turn the thing off and use
- my system productively without it. But...I don't like having a paperweight
- I spent ~$600 on around just to install the OS if I have to.
-
- Why is it doing this? How do I get the thing to work properly?
- Would it do me any good to try to return it? (provided I can actually do
- so, which I doubt) What gives?
-
- Gack...sorry for spouting off for so long, but it's bugging the
- heck out of me...
-
- Any responses *most* welcome...
