- Hi everybody,
-
- The following is a summary on using SUNCD Player to upgrade NeXT with
- NS3.0.
-
- Thanks a lot for those who replied to me. I just can't personally
- thanks everyone of them.
-
- I hope this summary would help the others.

- I upgraded a Turbo NeXTStation using a SUN CD rom drive a short while ago.
- I had some problems getting the NeXT to recognize the drive correctly while
- still in 2.1, but after a few reboots (make sure the drive is powered on
- before booting the system) it worked okay. I've had no problems with it while
- running the 3.0 OS.
- Good luck!

- We hooked up our Sun cdrom without any modifications at all.
- In fact, since the upgrade, we have left the Sun CDROM drive on the
- NeXT. So far no problems at all. You will recieve a message during
- bootup that states "MESSAGE REFUSED RECEIVED" or something similar
-
- Have fun!

- I used a Sun CD-ROM drive for my 3.0 installation. I just hooked it to the
- SCSI port w/ the sun cable, rebooted, and it worked. Nothing special was
- needed.

- We have been using a Sun CD-ROM to do upgrades for our own (26) systems and those of
- our NeXT community. It works fine. We are also selling (available now) a Toshiba
- CD-ROM (in a black enclosure for esthetics) as well. Everything works fine.

- There's a problem here, I guess. A 68030 NeXT has a Macintosh 25-pin
- SCSI connector. The Sun CD player has a 50-pin micro-SCSI connector.
-
- So you need some piece of intermediate equipment that can be used
- as a connector converter. Like an external disk drive for the NeXT.
-
- 030 NeXT -> External disk -> Sun CD reader -> bus terminator
- db25 telco telco micro micro micro
- 50 50 SCSI 50 SCSI 50 SCSI 50
-
- Things drawn as -> are supposed to be cables, with the designated
- connectors on them. Connectors labeled "telco" are also known as
- "centronics type" although their real name is "micro-ribbon". Connectors
- labeled "microSCSI" are also known as "SCSI 2".
-
- The Sun CD reader should have come with a microSCSI terminator as a
- standard part of it.
-
- I don't know where you can get db25 to microSCSI cables, but that would
- be another approach. I don't have this problem exactly because I am
- using a 68040 NeXT which starts out with a microSCSI connector.

- Andy,
-
- You'll need a special SCSI1 to SCSI2 cable, since you have a SCSI1 type interface
- on your 030 while the Sun CDROM player has a SCSI2 connector. Other than the
- connectors there's nothing special about the cable. These kind of things are
- pretty standard stuff. You can get these from Next connection.
-
- Your welcome anyway! I hope that the above answers your questions.
-
- Take care,
- Tim

-
- We used the cable which came with the Sun CD-ROM player, which to my untrained
- eye is a regular SCSI cable.

- We were unable to install NS3.0 from a Sun CD-ROM player <<connected to a Sun
- that was accessible through NFS>>, but we were successful when we physically
- moved the same Sun CD-ROM player and connected it directly to the NeXT.

- You need either a floppy drive or the ability to read at least one
- magic file off the CD-rom. Sort of a chicken-and-egg problem. If you
- can boot from a floppy, everything is ok. Otherwise, you can make a
- dummy boot disk (OD is ok) that will boot directly from the CD. But
- the file to make the boot disk is on the CD, and you can't read it
- until you can run a couple of the programs from the floppy which allow
- you to read the CD from a non-turbo NeXT.
-
- If you can't get help more locally, write back and I will see what
- I can do to help.

- Works much faster than the Next CD ROM player. The next CD ROM
- player features extremely slow access time. You may save >20 minutes
- on your install/upgrade with the Sun hardware. I've installed NS 3.0
- with SUN players on all types of Next hardware successfully.
