  13. One of our mips machines is experiencing the following problem
  14.  
  15. The user(also a super user) couldnt log in as root as his root passwd was
  16. not being accepted.  He tried su but that was of no help.
  17.  
  18. So I went down to single user and removed the root passwd. I then tried to
  19. set a new root passwd. 
  20.  
  21. Everytime I did a 
  22. # passwd 
  23.  
  24. I would get,

  26. New passwd:
  27. Re-enter new passwd:

  29. # 
  30.  
  31. I would be dropped back to the root prompt before I could enter the new passwd.
  32. The passwd field in the /etc/passwd file would then be filled with some 
  33. garbage passwd.

  35. I also tried to login as a normal user but was facing the same problem.

  37. Any suggestions on what possibly went wrong and where???
