- Is there any way to force a file to launch a particular copy of an
- application if there are copies of that application on more than one
- mounted volume?
-
- For example, if I have a copy of Word on my internal hard drive as
- well as a copy on an external drive (or netowrk volume) and I double-
- click on a Word document the copy of Word on my internal hard drive will
- load. This happens regardless of which copy of Word was used to create
- the file. I suppose this is due to the Mac searching the internal hard
- drive first to see if an application matching the creator type can be found.
- If so, that's the copy of the application that's loaded and no other volumes
- are searched.
-
- What I want is to control which copy of an application will be launched if
- multiple copies exist. Is there any way I can modify the search routine
- so an external or network volume is searched first.
-
- Yes, removing the copy of the application on the internal hard drive will
- force this but that's not an option in this case. And yes, I can alias
- the copy of the application on the external or network volume and place
- the alias in the Apple Menu Items and/or Startup Items folders but that
- doesn't handle the situation when a file created with that application is
- clicked and the application is not already loaded. That's the situation I
- want to be able to control which copy of an application is loaded.
-
- Thanks for any help/suggestions offered.
