- Hi everyone,
- Sorry to be such an ignoramus. I have both Adobe (bitmap and
- PostScript) and Apple (bitmap and TrueType) versions of certain basic
- fonts such as Times and Helvetica. I've actually found that I prefer the
- bitmapped 10 and 12 point Adobe fonts to the Apple equivalents, but the
- problem is not there. I know that if there's a TrueType and a PostScript
- version of the same font, System 7 will use the TrueType version. I guess
- I'm thinking of removing the TrueType versions entirely. What I don't
- understand is the multiplication of fonts in the Adobe family of
- bitmapped fonts. Until I acquired some Adobe fonts, I never saw such
- things as "B Times Bold," "BI Times Italic" and "BI Times BoldItalic," at
- least not in the bitmapped format. If I chose a word in Times and type
- command-I in Word 5 to make it italic, it remains "Times." I can also
- convert it to "BI Times Italic" which manifestly is not the same thing to
- the system. My question is this: if the basic Times font includes italic,
- bold, and bold italic, do I need the above mentioned variants? "B Times
- Bold" seems bolder than making something bold in Times. Are these minute
- differences only for DTP people? Is there any reason for me to hang keep
- the TrueType version of Times in my Fonts folder?
- Please reply to me directly so that this doesn't seem too
- embarrassing.
- Yours truly,
- Marc Bizer (mlbizer@bongo.cc.utexas.edu)
-
- P.S. Has anyone else noticed that TrueType fonts do seem to draw on the
- screen more quickly than PostScipt fonts under both ATM 2.0.3 and 3.0.
