  20. I don't think this is a problem with System 7.1 per se, since I have
  21. seen it on at least one other machine -- and *that* one was running
  22. 6.0.2 at the time.  That problem was fixed when the mouse was replaced
  23. *and* the system software was re-installed; I don't know if the same will
  24. work in this case, but I thought I'd suggest it anyway.

  28. This isn't Apple's fault.  According to the Insignia reps with whom I
  29. spoke at the Boston MacWorld Expo in August, Insignia's programmers
  30. didn't follow certain programming guidelines in AccessPC 1.0 through
  31. 1.3.  The code that Insignia licensed to Apple for Macintosh PC Exchange,
  32. and that is used in AccessPC 2.0, reflects the fact that the programmers
  33. *are* now following proper procedures.  (One example:  Have you ever tried
  34. unmounting a SoftPC "hard disk" file under AccessPC 1.3 and System 7.0
  35. or 7.0.1?  You get an error message; AccessPC 2.0 doesn't have this
  36. problem.)

  41. Now *this* one is definitely Apple's fault.  MacTCP 1.0.1 had problems
  42. with System 7.0, and now MacTCP 1.1 has problems with System 7.1.
  43. Apple can't even keep its products compatible with each other; I've
  44. never seen anything like this!  However, you might try contacting the
  45. distributor of the software you've been using with MacTCP 1.1; many of
  46. these distributors can help you get MacTCP 1.1.1 for free or for a
  47. nominal (i.e. less than the $100 that Apple wants) charge.

  54. Apple pissed me off a long time ago.  I'm still wondering how they
  55. think people will get good "at-home service" for the Performas when
  56. none of the people at the Customer Assistance Center and few of Apple's
  57. authorized repair personnel have a clue as to what they're talking
  58. about.
