  22.  When printing bitmap fonts to the ImageWriter or ImageWriter II using the
  23. "Best" setting, the output quality will be greatly enhanced if there is
  24. installed a font _twice_ the point size actually used in the document.  This
  25. is because the ImageWriter has two resolutions: 72 and 144 dpi.  When you
  26. select "Best" quality, the system sets the printer to 144 dpi.  When the
  27. document contains, for example, some 12 pt text, the system substitutes a
  28. 24 pt font.  At 144 dpi, it comes out the same size as a 12pt font would if
  29. printed at 72dpi, but much less jaggedy, due to there being more dots.

  31. The late, un-lamented ImageWriter LQ printer was the one that required
  32. bitmap fonts at triple the point size, since it had a "Best" resolution of
  33. 216dpi.
