- To obtain the Apple CD-ROM Driver 4.0 legally I believe you need to buy a
- Macintosh product that comes equipped with a builtin CD-ROM drive (The
- Apple 300i mechanism (Sony 8003))
-
- To obtain it illegally, you can find it on various Macintosh pirate
- bulletin boards including some in southern California.
-
- I have three different versions including betas, final candidates
- (4.0fc2), and am told a release 4.0 version is now on various BBS's.
-
- You are right, Apple's Hexorcist Developer CD-ROM and latest 7.1 localized
- and 7.1 Kanjitalk CD ROMs do not have the 4.0 CD-ROM driver.
-
- Knowing Apple though They may NEVER EVER give out the software.
-
- They charge about 500 dollars for the System 7.1 upgrade CD-ROM liscensed
- for multiple system upgrades, and $50 for individual upgrades for people
- who recently paid $99 for 7.01 upgrade software. With this new Apple/IBM
- alliance, Apple will now try to gouge its customers in the aftermarket
- support and not in the initial purchase price. It is a lowered profit
- margin on the newly purchased units.
-
- To answer your question directly about how to get the Apple CD-ROM 4.0
- driver... You need to buy a Apple 300 CD-ROM (Not the 300i) for an
- estimated retail price of $499.00. After you do, you can use it on the
- system you attach the Apple 300 drive to. The system then will enable your
- Apple CD drive equipped with a Sony 8001 mechanism (Apple CD SC) to read
- PhotoCD. It also fixes a few internal bugs with Apples audio player DA.
- You cannot use the 4.0 driver on a different system because of legal
- reasons. I believe the software liscense on the software is intended for
- supporting the hardware shipped with the software. I could be wrong since
- I never read the distribution liscense yet on the Apple CD-ROM 4.0 driver.
- The external Apple CD ROM model 300 ***IS NOT SHIPPING YET** so you will
- have to buy a complete computer system from Apple to obtain the newer
- Apple CD-ROM 4.0 driver enabling PhotoCD use.
-
-
- Better still you could hope that the FWB CD-ROM ToolKit ships soon. It
- will do a lot for any CD-ROM owner including pre-scan files and
- directories for fast finder browsing/mounting. It also can perform read
- ahead caching and other stuff. It would work with your Apple CD SC with
- PhotoCD files (single session)
