- Here is the announcement that was posted to the info-mac digest
- (vol 10, issue 247). BTW, I got a copy of the CD-ROM and the service
- was excellent. They've done a good job putting this together. The only
- drawback is that many files aren't on the CD (presumably because they
- weren't able to obtain permission in time). There are lists of which
- files are and aren't on the CD available.

- Subject: [!] Info-Mac CD-ROM release
-
- The Info-Mac CD-ROM that we posted about a couple months ago is finally
- ready!
- (For those of you who missed the original posting: Cliff Miller and Joe
- Novak, two CS grad students at the Univ of Utah, decided that putting the
- Mac-Info on a quarterly CD-ROM would be a real service to the Mac community
- and might provide a little extra funds for Info-Mac as well as for their own
- (Cliff & Joe's) meager livelihood. In the process, a small company has been
- set up in the basement of Cliff's home to put together the CD and to take
- orders.)
-
- The CD-ROM contains all of the digests and many of the programs and other
- files from the Info-Mac archive. They were downloaded in August of 1992 and
- the programs have been debinhexed/dearchived/decompressed, so that they are
- ready to run. All of the abstracts are also included along with the
- programs.
- The CD-ROM preserves the basic structure of the original archive and it is in
- HFS format, so it looks and behaves like a large Mac directory, as it should!
- For those of you who like to look back over the digests, this should provide a
- much more convinient way to search for discussions on various topics.
-
- In putting files on the CD-ROM we have done our best to check through all of
- the files for copyright restrictions. In cases where there appeared to be
- restrictions, we tried to contact the author for permission. In over 95% of
- the cases in which we received a message from the author, the answer was very
- positive. There were several files, however, that contain copyrighted
- material from movies, soundtracks or other sources, so we had to leave those
- off. The upshot of all this is that about 3/4 of all of the files on Info-Mac
- are included on the CD. In future issues, as the CD-ROM becomes better known,
- we hope that the number of programs will grow.
-
- We have included a file on the CD-ROM indicating which files are on the CD and
- which files are not on it (but are/were on the Info-Mac archive at
- sumex-aim).
- Unfortunately, by mistake this file contains some bogus filenames labelled as
- eing in an "unknown" directory -- these files are not on the CD-ROM. Please
- also notice that the file names correspond to the original file names as
- contained in the sumex-aim Info-Mac archive, and do not necessarily match the
- uncompressed versions that are on the CD-ROM. We are sorry about any
- confusion this may create.
-
- There were several excellent suggestions from people on the net, and we hope
- to implement some of them in future (quarterly) issues. Thank you all for the
- encouragement, suggestions and help! Most of all, thanks to the moderator of
- Info-Mac, Bill Lipa, for the good ideas and the support! (Let me once again
- point out that neither he nor sumex-aim is legally responsible for the
- CD-ROM.) Further comments and suggestions by all will continue to be much
- appreciated.
