- I guess I should have added that I can get about a 20% savings (no
- more than this) with normal compression utilities. Speed is not
- an issue. I want to compress for semi-permanent storage on a
- hard drive. There are on average 800 PICT resources per file.
- Because of this, it is not practical to use software that would
- require compressing each PICT individually.
-
- If I find something useful, I'll post. Thanks to those who
- responded, including:
-
- leonardr@netcom.com queried what version of StuffIt I was using.
- I was using the last ShareWare (yes, I'm a registered user; in fact,
- StuffIt was one of the few shareware products that I've registered
- for that mailed an updated version like they said they would, but
- that's another story) version (1.5.1?). He suggested that since
- resource compressors are designed for speed, they might not be as
- good as CompactPro or StuffIt. I couldn't get better than 20%,
- though.
-
- maynard@msc2.msc.cornell.edu suggested using QuickTime, JPEG, or
- PictPixie (from ftp.apple.com) but that wouldn't be practical for
- my case (but a good idea nonetheless).
-
- shiekh@ictp.trieste.it suggested AutoCompressor 2.0, but that is
- not shareware, I believe.
