- Sorry this is so long, but...
-
- About a month ago, I posted a question (attached below) about some disk
- problems I was having. The responses I got generally indicated that I should
- back everything up, try Disk First Aid, maybe Norton Utilities, and then I
- would probably have to reformat the disk anyway.
-
- Well, it took this long for me to try anything because a couple of mail-order
- vendors had some SPECIAL package deals with Norton Utilities, so I kept
- waiting for deliveries, but that's another story...
-
- Anyway, Disk First Aid simply told me there was a problem with the disk that
- it couldn't handle. (BTW, the verbage that came up with error -43 was "The
- filename xxxxxx couldn't be written because a disk error occurred."
-
- After cancelling two mail orders, I finally got Norton Utilities. I ran
- the Disk Doctor utility (I think that's what it's called), and was told that
- my hard disk's root directory had a problem and the Norton Utilities couldn't
- fix it.
-
- OK, so I'd backed everything up on a couple of removeables (they're great!)
- and reformatted the hard disk. I installed a fresh copy of System 7 (no more
- System 6), and recovered all my data from the removeables. Everything appeared
- to be working for about a week.
-
- A lot of the files that were backed up on the removeables were backed up
- in DiskDoubler compressed format. Since reinstalling them on the hard disk,
- several had been decompressed with no problem. BUT, last night, I decompressed
- another one, and since then I can't get WordPerfect 2.0.4 to come up. Even a
- fresh copy won't come up (although WordPerfect 1.x has no problem). I'm seeing
- two messages one right after the other:
-
- "Bad file name or volume name (-37)"
-
- "Disk full! Please free some disk space on the volume that contains
- the temporary files."
-
- I get the latter message several times. But the disk isn't full... there's
- over 60 MB available!
-
- So where do I go from here? Is Rodime still around? Anyone know how I can get
- in touch with them? The driver and formatter are several years old, and I'm
- wondering if there might be some problem with them and System 7.
-
- What other choices do I have, besides junking the disk?
-
- Thanks to all who actually read all this, and especially to those who have
- some helpful hints.
