-
- 1). Yes, it just puts 256 shades of grey in the CLUT (color look-up
- table). The CLUT can have any 256 colors out of the palette of 16 million.
-
- 2). Not when "Colors" is selected in the control panel. 16-bit mode does
- NOT have a CLUT (it would take up too much memory). Since 16-bit mode
- is 5 bits red, 5 bits green, and 5 bits blue, and grey is R=G=B, there
- are 5 bits worth of greys, which is 32 total greys. By the way, the
- extra bit is unused ("Reserved" in official Apple-lingo).
-
- If you are in "Greys" mode, you would get 16 bits worth of
- greys, which is 65536 greys. Maybe 15 bits (as I have not verified this).

- The above was email I received. He asked me to post it as he did not
- have the ability to do so at the moment. Actually, I assume that in
- Greys mode you don't have the option of 16 bit mode. Presumably the
- circuitry cannot handle more than 8 bits per channel, which would limit
- you to 8 bit (256) greys.
-
- Does anyone know if this (both color and grey) are the same way that the
- Quadra 950 handles 16bit mode when it can (enough vram)?
