- Fellow netters,
-
- I believe I have been defrauded in a deal on the net. The details of the
- deal will follow shortly. I would like to know if there is any way I can
- recover my money. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
-
- Sorry for the length of this message, but I had to include some of the detail
- in order to expose this guy.
-
- On Oct. 14, Charles Purwin (purwinc@woods.ulowell.edu) posted the following:
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
- For sale MAC monitor.
-

- 1280x1024 .26dp
- 16" screen color
- swivel base

-
- I responded to his ad asking what type of video board would be required to
- use this monitor with a Mac. He said that it would work with a RasterOps
- or similar board as long as it had a 15pin connector on it.
-
- I thought OK, that sounds good enough. I then offered him $400 and split
- shipping. He counter offered $425 and split shipping. I accepted. He
- was to ship it COD cash for $425 + half of the shipping charges. After
- a long while, he finally shipped the monitor COD for $425 + all the shipping
- charges. I accepted the package from UPS thinking that he might have
- forgotten the split shipping. After contacting Charles, he agreed to send
- me the difference, but until now, I have not seen ay money.
-
- That is not the worst of it .... read on ...
-
- I opened the package, and right away I noticed a crack in one corner of the
- monitor. It was obvious that the crack was not due to shipping because
- someone had tried (unsuccessfully) to put some glue in the crack! I was
- quite disappointed at that moment because Mr. Purwin had not said anything
- about it before and that I would have never bought the monitor if I knew it
- had a crack. But that is NOT the worst of it ...
-
- I said to myself, well, if the monitor works good I might at least try to
- negotiate a partial refund or something. I hooked up the monitor to a Lapis
- board that supports monitors up to 17". It did not work. I then hooked it
- up to a RasterOps. That did not work. I tried it with the Mac IIsi internal
- video, that obviously did not work.
-
- I contacted Charles Purwin telling him all the above and requested that he
- send me some specs on the monitor for me to see if I could get it to work.
- His answer to the crack was that he was sorry and that he would send me $15
- because of it. Mind you that he still owes me half of the shipping, which
- would be about $12. His answer to the monitor not working was that it worked
- in his IIcx. He offered to fax me a spec sheet that Ikegami had sent him.
-
- I got the fax. It described the Ikegami model number CDE-165. From the
- description, it seemed that Charles was right and that it should work with
- either the Lapis board or the RasterOps board. However, I still could not
- get it to work.
-
- I called Ikegami to get help. They said that the specific model number
- that I had (CDE-165VB AF68) was specifically made for Agfa computers and
- because of the special fixed scan rates, there is NO board on the market that
- would drive the monitor. That is true for Mac and IBM, they said. They
- faxed me the spec sheet on the CDE-165VB AF68. Obviously Ikegami knows
- what they built. And they were right, the monitor did not work with any
- Mac nor IBM boards.
-
- Again I contacted Charles Purwin and told him the facts and demanded that
- my money be refunded. After ignoring my e-mail for a number of days, and
- after repeated attempts to reach him, he finally responded by saying that
- he had tried the monitor with a Radius GS/CM board before he shipped it, and
- that it worked. He totally ignored my request for a refund.
-
- At this stage, not knowing what a Radius GS/CM board is, I just got tired of
- all this deception and asked him for a refund once again. My main reason is
- that the monitor is not as he advertised. It is broken (has a crack) and it
- does not work.
-
- Up until now, he has refused to even answer my e-mail messages. I would like
- to pursue this matter with legal action if possible, but I don't know what
- needs to be done.
-
- We definitely don't want this kind of deceptive dealing to go on the net.
- If you can help, in any way, please let me know.
-
- Thanks
