  13. My printer has turned suicidal and I don't know what to do about it.

  16. Last night while printing a document, my ImageWriter II print head
  17. slammed all the way over to the left and the blinking red error light
  18. came on.

  20. It has done this on rare occasions in the past, and the cure has been
  21. to manually move the print head back to someplace reasonable and try
  22. again.  However, last night it decided to adopt this behavior as a
  23. permanent lifestyle.  (The timing was such as to make Murphy
  24. proud...but that's another story.)

  26. When I run the self-test (using the Linefeed and On/Off buttons), the
  27. printer prints one set of four lines, slams against the left side of
  28. the case, and the blinking red error light comes on.  This clearly
  29. indicates the problem is in the printer, not in the computer or
  30. connections.  (However, oddly, when the printer jams when printing a
  31. document, the computer hangs--it must be telling the computer it's
  32. busy, or something.)

  34. Printing simple documents from MiniWriter works -- sometimes.  I'm not
  35. quite sure of the parameters, but it's 100% reproducible: exactly the
  36. same behavior for the same setup.  It's not an intermittent problem.

  38. I have Larry Pina's book on Macintosh Printer Repair and Upgrade
  39. Secrets, but he doesn't discuss left tropisms.

  43. I suspect there's a head position sensor somewhere that's gone bad,
  44. but I can't find it.  I don't even know where to look.

  46. BTW, as the printer is printing it makes its usual loud buzz.  Then it
  47. briefly makes a similar but louder, somewhat higher pitched buzz, and
  48. slams itself against the left.

  50. Any help would be appreciated.  Detailed instructions would be
  51. wonderful, but even generalities would help.
