- My printer has turned suicidal and I don't know what to do about it.
- I need help.
-
- Last night while printing a document, my ImageWriter II print head
- slammed all the way over to the left and the blinking red error light
- came on.
-
- It has done this on rare occasions in the past, and the cure has been
- to manually move the print head back to someplace reasonable and try
- again. However, last night it decided to adopt this behavior as a
- permanent lifestyle. (The timing was such as to make Murphy
- proud...but that's another story.)
-
- When I run the self-test (using the Linefeed and On/Off buttons), the
- printer prints one set of four lines, slams against the left side of
- the case, and the blinking red error light comes on. This clearly
- indicates the problem is in the printer, not in the computer or
- connections. (However, oddly, when the printer jams when printing a
- document, the computer hangs--it must be telling the computer it's
- busy, or something.)
-
- Printing simple documents from MiniWriter works -- sometimes. I'm not
- quite sure of the parameters, but it's 100% reproducible: exactly the
- same behavior for the same setup. It's not an intermittent problem.
-
- I have Larry Pina's book on Macintosh Printer Repair and Upgrade
- Secrets, but he doesn't discuss left tropisms.
-
- Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
- I suspect there's a head position sensor somewhere that's gone bad,
- but I can't find it. I don't even know where to look.
-
- BTW, as the printer is printing it makes its usual loud buzz. Then it
- briefly makes a similar but louder, somewhat higher pitched buzz, and
- slams itself against the left.
-
- Any help would be appreciated. Detailed instructions would be
- wonderful, but even generalities would help.
-
- Thanks...
