- HELP! Here's a problem for you technical whizzes out there:
-
- A friend of mine just purchased and installed System 7.1 on his SE/30
- 5/40. Since this time, he has not been able to format either 800K or 1.4 MB
- diskettes. He gets the normal "formatting disk" and "verifying format"
- messages, but then a "re-verifying format" message comes up, followed by an
- "initialization failed message" and the disk being spit out of the drive.
-
- I'm pretty sure this is not an extension problem. The machine will not
- format diskettes even with the extensions turned off. By the way, I have
- updated the SCSI driver.
-
- I'm certain it's not the diskettes' fault--I've had no trouble formatting
- them on my SE/30 (which, incidentally, is also running 7.1)
-
- I've cleaned his drive with a head cleaning diskette and will be blowing
- it out with compressed air sometime during the next few days.
-
- Questions:
-
- 1. What other steps should I take to get the drive up and running?
- 2. Should I try re-installing System 7.1?

- Francisco Bay area (or anywhere in that part of California for that matter)
- that will repair the drive at a reasonable cost?

- Thanks for your help! Please e-mail me directly at
