- I've just had a major crash of my LaCie 40 meg drive, and since LaCie's
- tech support won't be open until Monday, I'm hoping someone on the net
- can help me.
-
- Here's the scenario:
- Hardware:
- SE/30, 2meg RAM + 2meg VM (4 total)
- LaCie ZFP 40 meg external hard drive (startup disk)
- Apple internal 20 meg hard drive
-
- System software:
- 7.0.1 with tuneup
- inits: Disinfectant, MIDI manager, BeHierarchic, TrashMan
-
- What happened:
- I ran Silverlining from the LaCie drive, planning to do a routine test
- of both hard drives, and with the LaCie drive selected, chose
- "Full Read/Write test." The Mac immediately crashed with a bus error.
- After rebooting, the LaCie drive no longer mounts. Silverlining (run
- from a floppy now) says that the partition table is invalid, and after
- "scavenging" for partitions, it comes up with a main partition that
- doesn't look the same size as the old one, and it won't mount anyway.
-
- Now I know I could probably solve all this by reformatting the drive
- (and I did back up the data on the drive just before this adventure
- started), but I'd like to avoid that if possible since it would mean
- reinstalling the system and applications.
-
- Anyone out there experienced a problem like this? Is there a way to get
- the drive back without reformatting? What could have caused this (so
- that I don't let it happen again)? Could running Silverlining with
- virtual memory active have something to do with it?
-
- Thanks in advance for any answers to the questions above (email or
- posting is fine).
