- I've heard a few people mention their failures in upgrading their IIsi to
- 25Mhz. Now, I haven't done this upgrade myself, but I have been following the
- discussion ever since the thread began. I have an opinion on why some IIsi's
- might be failing. Here goes:
-
- Alright, it's pretty well understood that the IIsi motherboard is quite similar
- to that of the IIci. If this is true, it helps to know what the differences
- are. So what is different? Well, the first thing that popped into my mind was
- that the SIMMs in the IIci are 80ns chips while the SIMMs in the IIsi are 100ns.
- So, to me it would seem that if your IIsi did NOT have 80ns or faster simms
- installed in it, the upgrade would not work.
-
- This seems to follow along with the 25% increase in speed the upgrades allows.
- 80ns = 25% faster than 100ns so again, it seems to me that 80ns would be
- required. So the question to ask those who failed seems to be, "Am I using the
- original simms that came with my Mac?" If so, you probably bought the 5/80
- configuration. I would think that 100ns simms would have been installed by
- Apple (stupid as that is). For those who bought the older 2/40 or the newer
- 3/40 configs, if you upgraded to 5 megs or more, the question would be to ask,
- "Were the simms I bought 80ns or faster?". If you don't know, it seems that it
- would be a simple matter of calling whoever you bought them from.
-
- Does all this seem plausible to anyone/everyone? I have a 5/140 config with
- 80ns simms so am seriously considering the upgrade. I'm very interested in
- hearing what others have to say about this.
-
- Oh, please post replies. <sarcastically> I'm *pretty* sure many others are
- interested in this also! ;-)
