- HELP!! My hard drive, a Seagate ST177N 60mb SCSI external model,
- serial #478941, is making horrid noises. It will start up with no problem, but
- after a few minutes the motor will shut off, then start up again, but will make
- a loud screeching noise and shut off again. If I'm lucky, all I have to do is
- shut off the power, then turn it back on again. Usually it will keep making
- that scratching noise and shutting off. After shutting it off and on again
- several times, it will run smoothly again. What the heck is going on
- here!??!?? I'm not sure if it's sticktion or a head crash. Luckily, I haven't
- lost any data, but this is happening more frequently. I was smart enough to
- back up my data. Is there anything I can do, short of returning it to the
- manufacturer? It's still under warranty.
-
- Also, does Seagate Technologies have an E-mail address, that can be
- reached via Internet? If not, how can I reach them? I bought this drive from
- a company called Wholesale 54, which is no longer in business. When I called,
- they said they still handle repairs, but I'm rather leery of them. I've heard
- horror stories of customers who've been sold drives that were marked
- "defective", and who've sent drives back for repairs, never to see them again.
- Since all these companies do is send the drive mechanism back to the
- manufacturer, I'd prefer dealing with the manufacturer directly, rather than
- risk getting reamed by a shady company.
