- |The cheapest way of doing this is to
- | 1. Buy a Sun3/60
- | 2. Remove all the solder from the 68030 socket on the motherboard.
- | 3. Put in a 68030 size socket.
- | 4. Put in a MC68030, remove MC68020.
-
- Item 1: I figure that you are buying from someone who has a 3/60 rather than
- surplus, Sun, etc... I reciently found out from a Sun FE that the 3/60 era
- motherboards are being destroyed 8( as soon as Sun owns them again (serial
- number reusage was the reason/excuse he quoted). Seems a pity since there are
- those of us that would LOVE to get a 3/60C...
-
- Item 2: This probably should read 68020, not 68030. I hope that I am correct
- on this...
-
- Item 3: Given the cost of building/maintaining a custom workstation vs. buying
- something such as an A3000 (spiffy box), Atari TT (no experience with it), or
- a Sun 3 (The 3/80 used the '030)... my opinion is that a university would
- probably be better of with the latter, especially with donations. The why
- is that a WS would probably involve several ASICs ($$$), multi-layer boards
- because of PGA packages (more $$$), signal cross-talk and RFI considerations
- (the prior gets you miffed at your erronious system, the latter gets the FCC
- miffed at you and possibly wanting $$$$$$! 8( ), etc...etc...ad infinitum...
- ad nausium (sp 8) )... Besides, it is easier to get HW/SW for them. I know
- this since I am designing a system based on the 68K family...and a 3/60
- would be a great cross-platform for SW development.
-
- BTW: A WS implies a nice graphics setup, which is also very $$$.
