- I considered CompuAdd, Zeos Freestyle, Compaq, and the new IBM Thinkpads.
- Reviews of the CompuAdd all mentioned short battery life. Zeos in
- financial difficulties -- lots of complaints about endless delivery
- delays on Zeos news groups.
- I bought the Compaq Contura at Office Depot for $2000 -- 84 meg HD,
- 4 mem ram, Windows 3.1, DOS 5, PFS:Winworks (old version). Has 64K
- cache. So far, I like it. Video is good, has key activated power
- management -- screen reversal, screen blanking, 4 power settings
- (3 factory-set, 1 custom), and battery meter.
- Keyboard is OK -- smaller-size cursor keys and function keys mildly
- annoying but not fatal. Comes with Tractball that attaches to side
- of keyboard and works well (but might cramp typing for some).
- Annoying key clicks can be silenced thru combination of FN key and
- other keys.
- I have 30 day trial period, so I've tried several times to test battery
- life -- with power-saving features on HIGH (uses least amount of power)
- and using white on black screen (less energy-consuming) I've gotten
- 3+ hours both times. Recharging with system off is about 1 hour.
- I'm trying to evaluate new IBM's before my trial period runs out.
- I'm not a fan of windows -- want a solid machine for DOS text-based
- programs + reference tools (atlases, dictionary, encyclopedia, etc).
- The Contura appears to be a fine machine for my needs at a reasonable
- enough price.
