- After looking over the FAQ for this group and reading some of the
- other net articles I'm still having a difficult time determining the
- best way to go about upgrading my 50Z. Below are my current specs:
-
- Model: 50Z (286, 10Mhz)
- RAM: 6M (2M on motherboard, 4M on BOCA expansion card)
- Monitor: IBM Model 8513 (VGA, 13")
- O/S: DOS 5.0 & Windows 3.1
- Primary
- Application: Borland Objectvision V2.1 (Forms based GUI)
-
- My biggest problem is the speed at which my 50Z draws the screens, usually
- 2 to 5 seconds. When I'm running the application this isn't real bad but
- when I'm working in the development environment it's very annoying. I don't
- have to have real super speed but I would like my PC to work as fast as I
- think. :)
-
- I've talked with Borland and they suggested upgrading my CPU. I asked about
- video accelerators but the guy I talked to said that they didn't use them.
- I think they do most of their development for Objectvision on 386DX's.
-
- Questions:
-
- 1) Should I upgrade my CPU first? With what upgrade package (Kingston,
- Evergreen, other)? Is there a big difference in performance between
- the 386 and 486 upgrade packages?
-
- 2) What about video accelerators (and what kind)? How
- much do video accelerators help? VGA is sufficient.
-
- 3) Will the use of my current memory expansion card affect how I will
- be able to upgrade?
-
- 4) Am I trying to do too much with this PC?
-
- I (like most people) don't want to spend a fortune. If the cost is too
- much I suppose I should just buy a new 486 system. I'm hoping to avoid
- that. Please give me your suggestions. Thanks in advance.
