- Greetings to all in net.land:
- My wife and I are constantly jockeying for computer time. In order to make
- a happier marriage, it's time to bite the bullet and buy another computer.
- I'm looking to purchase a system in the $1,800 - $2,200 range. Ideally that
- would include a CD-ROM. Mostly, we use the computer for games, and also for
- a few Windows-based applications (mostly WordPerfect 5.1 and a few other
- Windows-based games). We also use it for communications (but we already have
- an extra modem, and my existing machine has a 14,400 fax/modem already).
- What to do? I want the best performance within that price range. It seems
- that I can either buy a faster CPU (486DX/50 perhaps) with cheap video and
- less RAM (perhaps 4 MB), or I can buy a slower CPU (386DX/40 or 486SX/25) with
- faster video and more RAM (perhaps 8 MB). I don't know which would be better
- in my situation. I have a hunch that the better video would be preferable
- since cheap video wastes the added performance of a faster CPU anyway.
- In light of that, which is better: a 386DX/40 or a 486SX/25? I've heard
- the 386/40 is (ever so) slightly faster but that the 486SX is more desirable
- (and about $50 more) since it's easily upgradeable. I envision my system as
- follows:
- * 386DX/40 or 486SX/25 motherboard
- * 8 MB RAM
- * 1024x768 SVGA 14" non-interlaced monitor (.28)
- * fast video card with 1 MB VRAM
- * CD-ROM drive
- * 1.2 and 1.44 MB floppies
- * 210 (+/- 5 or 10) MB hard drive
- * Sound card and speakers
-
- Can anyone come up with a better configuration in the $2,000 range for a
- machine that is primarily a game player but also runs Windows on occasion?
- Oh, and I should add that we now have a 386DX/20 machine with 8 MB RAM and
- cheap video. We find its performance acceptable (for now, but I'm unsure
- about the future).
-
- Also, does anyone expect the 2.88 MB floppy drive to become standard any
- time soon? Would it be worth the extra money to get that instead of the 1.44
- floppy, even if I do only use 1.44 disks until the 2.88 disks come down in
- price? Any chance that software will start being placed on 2.88 MB disks in
- the next couple of years? Sorry for the million questions, but thanks for
- answering as many of them as you can.
