  17. The story I heard was that the 68050 was underway as an elarged cache 
  18. version of the 68040. When Motorola saw what the projected performance 
  19. numbers for the Pentium were going to be, they canned the 68050 and jumped 
  20. on the 68060, since finishing and productizing the 68050 would have delayed 
  21. the introduction of the 68060, and left them with a non-competitive 68050 
  22. chip for too long an interval while Intel outperformed them with the 
  23. Pentium. As it is, the 68060 is supposed to happen sometime in 1994 ( 
  24. unless they've moved the date now ). With even Apple migrating to the 
  25. PowerPC, there won't be many desktop machines still using the 680x0 
  26. processor anymore ( Amiga and Atari ? ).

  30. Has anyone noticed how many of the comments on the Pentium have been about
  31. nothing more than what a next generation name might be ? Must be hundreds 
  32. by now... :-)
