- The story I heard was that the 68050 was underway as an elarged cache
- version of the 68040. When Motorola saw what the projected performance
- numbers for the Pentium were going to be, they canned the 68050 and jumped
- on the 68060, since finishing and productizing the 68050 would have delayed
- the introduction of the 68060, and left them with a non-competitive 68050
- chip for too long an interval while Intel outperformed them with the
- Pentium. As it is, the 68060 is supposed to happen sometime in 1994 (
- unless they've moved the date now ). With even Apple migrating to the
- PowerPC, there won't be many desktop machines still using the 680x0
- processor anymore ( Amiga and Atari ? ).
