- I would be grateful for advice on the following problem. I have tried
- to keep this short-ish, if you would like any additional information,
- please feel free to mail me.
-
- Back in the summer I was getting intermittent error messages, such as
- Cannot write to Drive C:
- Data error reading Drive C:
- and, from WordPerfect,
- Disk error 23 reading drive C:
- Appearances were, as stated, intermittent and not consistent - i.e. it
- would give the error but on an immediate repeat of the operation be O.K.
- However, it gradually became more frequent. After a bit of (admittedly
- ill-advised!) fiddling by my partner and myself, I took the machine to
- the Computer Unit support group.
-
- They restored the machine to usability. To do this they used "wdformat"
- (I believe this is a LL formatter?). They told me that the
- logical->physical translation had got itself confused.
-
- I have not used the machine much since, but this week I it started it
- again, but with drive F:
- Sector not found reading Drive F:
- as well as the WordPerfect "Disk error 23" msg.
- The "Sector not found" was while copying a file from F: to floppy.
- However, the 2nd attempt to copy the same file was successful.
-
- The drive is a Seagate ST1239A, the PC is an Elonex 386/B25, and I am
- told that the controller is on the motherboard (I don't know whether
- this is usual or not, so please don't flame me). The machine was bought
- in December 1990 and has been lightly used (I estimate about 170 days use
- to date).
-
- This is not the the first hardware related problem - had one with cache
- memory board just after the 12 month warranty expired :-(. The board is
- now out of machine - if it is in the machine boots sometimes but not
- other times (and yes, the BIOS option has been reset).
-
- So, have I just got a Friday afternoon machine? Or is it a problem
- "upstream" of the disk and cache perchance? Possibly the motherboard?
- Or have I just been unlucky with the cache and now with the disk or
- controller (the one on the motherboard)?
-
- I would be grateful for any advice on the possible source of my
- problem(s) with the machine, and pointers as to what to do about it all.
-
- Many thanks,
-
- Stella
