  13. A friend of mine dropped in the other day with a non-working system...  It
  14. appears that his hard drive is not working.

  16. Symptom:

  18. The drive spins up fine at power up, but shuts down after a few minutes.
  19.  
  20. If the system boots before the motor shuts down, there is a tendency for
  21. information to be read, but _very_ slowly, and with (apparently) lots
  22. of retries and failures.
  23.  
  24. The drive's indicator light blinks:  # ! # #  (# "long", ! "short")
  25. I am assuming this is some kind of diagnostic code.  Can anyone help?
