- Nasir Ahmed Noor's fingers blurted out at All
- on the subject of "Reclaiming memory from BIOS"
-
- NAN> When system starts up, it reports [familiar tick sound and RAM test]
- NAN> only 7808K. It should, according to my calcs, report 8192K [i.e. 8
- NAN> Meg]. I tried BIOS setup [<DEL> key]. In the very first screen, where
- NAN> one sets the date time and HD type etc, base memory is listed as 640K
- NAN> and extended memory as 7168K. I cant change or reset these values [the
- NAN> 'cursor' won't go there]. I tried turning video and system shadow off,
- NAN> but it does not solve the problem. I still see the total system mem
- NAN> tick to only 7808K. How can I claim the rest of 384K?
-
- Nasir, it is most likely that you can't reclaim this memory. You can, if
- you have it, look at your motherboard's manual and see if the is a strap
- or switch that will relocate this memory. Otherwise it is probably hard-
- wired into the area between 640k and 1024k. Sorry the news couldn't be
- better.
