- I just inherited a network of over 100 IBM PS/2s of various
- flavors running DOS 5.0, Windows 3.1 and IBMs PCNet software.
- I have been tasked to recommend, purchase, install and administrate
- a departmental backup strategy.
-
- Having my roots in Unix, I would prefer a network based unattended
- solution, but I will settle for anything better than floppies.
- The unofficial divisional policy talks about 3 types of users
- - "1) The light user can use floppies with the DOS backup
- command; 2) Moderate users can share the portable tape unit
- that connect to the parallel port; 3) The heavy user can get
- a streaming tape drive for his/her system."
-
- I would like to establish a common solution for all users. Taking
- advantage of the PCNet would be beneficial too, I believe.
- Unfortunately, having a stronger background in Unix based hardware,
- software and solutions, I find myself at a disadvantage in the PC
- world.
-
- I'm looking for a place to start. Any suggestions, pointers or comments
- (as long as they're not rude :-) would be greatly appreciated. Please
- email any words of wisdom. I have directed follow-ups to me.
-
- Many thanks in advance.
