- I've entered this message in many different networks today because I'm
- so desparate for help with this problem. If you've seen it aleady
- elsewhere, please forgive me.
-
-
- If anyone could possibly help me with the problem I'm about to
- describe, please do. Thanks.
-
- I recently bought an Intel 14.4 EX modem. It has everything that
- a high speed modem should, except there's one problem. I run a
- board with it, and it's causing problems. I can dial out with
- no problems. I dial out and connect to just about every board at
- high speed on the first shot. But, it does NOT take very kindly
- to when users call my board. Below is a list of some of the
- strange things it does:
-
- 1. For some, not all, 2400 baud callers, it sends the file much
- too fast, causing the receiver to not be able to keep up,
- thus the download aborts. I notice that it takes off too
- fast (a normal Zmodem download), and has sent so many bytes
- so fast that they just can't keep up.
-
- 2. Some users are getting periodic line noise out of nowhere, ever
- since I installed it.
-
- 3. Certain users have trouble uploading, too many errors.
-
- 4. It is VERY picky about who it lets connect to me at high speed.
- It seems that it will only let a Dual Standard connect really
- correctly. I've had 9600 and 14400 Dual Standard callers call
- in and connect the first time, error free, and the transfers
- and everything are perfect. However, it doesn't seem to like
- other types of high speed modems. A friend of mine just bought
- a Zoom 14.4 V.32bis, and when, after calling other high speed
- boards and connecting no problem, he tried to call my board, it
- just wouldn't go. My modem picked up, started to connect, then
- stopped, tried again, stopped, tried again, etc. until it timed
- out. The same thing happened with a user who has a Hayes Smart-
- modem 9600 V.32. He calls in and it just refuses to connect,
- just a lot of screaming. He had to drop down to 2400 to connect.
- This shouldn't be.
-
- 5. On a few boards that I do try to dial out to, I can't connect. Now
- 99% of the boards that I call out to I connect beautifully, but
- that's not the case with the Secret Service BBS in Hunnington,
- West Virginia. The high speed handshake just goes on FOREVER,
- and eventually it times out. And when I try to call HAL 9600
- (they run 14400 ironically) I usually connect at 12000 and then
- get disconnected.
-
- 6. During transfers with some people (ONLY through the BBS, never
- when I'm logged in to a board, keep in mind all of these problems
- happen through the BBS only for the most part), it sends 1024
- bytes, then 2048 bytes, then 3072 bytes, then a few more.
- After that, it goes back down to 1024 again! Goes up to 2048,
- then goes back to 1024 once again! This is very upestting to me.
-
- It's just very frustrating. I don't want to think that I got a
- bum deal. The Intel 14.4 EX was rated VERY highly in PC Computing's
- June top products issue, and also excellently in other reviews, right
- up there with the USR. So, either I got a bad one or I'm doing
- something wrong. My initialization string for when I dial out is
- ATZ^M, and my initialization string for the BBS (actually FrontDoor)
- is ATZS0=0E0M0H0&D2^M. My error correct message is REL, and I
- have the serial port locked at 38400 baud. (It can handle 57600 but
- some doors can't) Also, on the BBS, it draws on my end at 38400
- baud, so if a user tries to spacebar abort a menu or screen, they
- have to be VERY quick, because if they even wait a second the whole
- thing is already drawn on my end and in the buffer, so there's
- nothing to space. I run TriBBS 3.3 and love it. I doubt the board
- has anything to do with it, could all of this be caused by my
- string possibly being off? Also, I don't have a high speed serial
- card, I use the same serial card that came with my computer, which
- came with an internal 2400 modem. Might a newer, faster serial
- card help? If so, what should I get?
-
- Can anybody help? PLEASE!!! Thank you in advance.
