- I am happy to report that my RFI nightmare is over.
-
- First, I installed a ferrite bead at the modem input.
-
- Second, I didn't take no from the phone company for an answer. I called
- them again, and they were quite sympathetic this time. They tested the
- line on their end and said it was "unbalanced" (whatever that means).
- They had a serviceperson out here right away who fixed the line and
- applied a line filter to boot.
-
- Third, we had arranged that our old phone line remain active and that
- both lines share the same (the old) phone number--so that if the phone
- rang at one place, it would ring at the other. Speculation has it
- that this arrangement was creating one giant (two-mile long) antenna.
- I had them disconnect the old line.
-
- The happy result: The problem has vanished!
-
- I'm a bit surprised, because the radio transmitter is right across the
- street!
-
- All in all, I'm really pretty lucky. I've come to know just how
- intractable this sort of problem can be. I would have been devastated
- if it had not been solved.
-
- Thanks goes to all the people who e-mailed their advice.
