- An Alternate Index to the HP48 Manuals
-
- Back on March 29th, toward the end of the second day of the HP
- Users' Conference in Philadelphia, a discussion was raised regarding
- the HP48 User Manual and its index. Despite its large size (29 pages
- and approximately two thousand entries), it was argued that still
- many important topics had been omitted. The first example mentioned
- was the lack of an entry for the display radix mark, requiring one to
- already know that command "FM," performs this function. (In all
- fairness to the original index, there indeed are entries "period as
- fraction mark" and "comma as fraction mark".)
- Having done a few annual indexes for the PPC Journal in the past,
- I volunteered to compile a revised index for the original two-volume
- HP48 Manuals. The goal was to develop the reference independently
- from the original index. As a result, the existing index was only
- cross-checked after the new document was virtually complete. In the
- first pass through the HP48 manuals, key subjects were compiled into
- a hand-written list in the order that they were encountered. The
- second pass consisted of entering these subjects into a computer
- editor in alphabetical order. If any subject had more than one key
- word, the entry was included multiple times as appropriate. As a
- result, major index sublists evolved such as "Commands", "Examples",
- "Illustrations" and "Menus".
- In the original discussion back in March, it was suggested that
- a "good index" contains an average of at least two references from
- each page of the source document. The HP48 manual's original index
- actually surpasses this benchmark, with around two thousand entries
- for the 821 pages of text. The alternate index contains somewhere
- between 3500 and 4000 entries. It is hoped that HP48 users will find
- it a useful resource for quickly accessing subject matter, perhaps
- even moreso than Hewlett-Packard's own offering.
- Recently, a revised single-volume manual has started appearing
- in the HP48 boxes. At the Philly conference we were informed by
- Dennis York that this version has been updated from cover to cover,
- with the significant addition of a complete menu tree in one of the
- appendices. Perhaps the alternate index should contain references to
- both the one-book and two-book versions of the HP48 documentation. This
- along with the possible incorporation of other useful HP48 reference
- texts is being considered as a project for the future. Any comments
- or suggestions for this project are eagerly welcomed.
