- I connected to our HP9k/720 running hpux 8.07 a HP35480 DAT from
- an OEM (at about half the price HP asks for it ...).
- It seems to work perfectly, both with and without compression, with
- fbackup, tar and dd, reading old tapes and all; but when I tried
- /etc/update, it displayed the tape contents fine and started loading
- but stopped almost immediately and complained that
-
- ERROR: Checksum error in tar archive header. The media is an
- unrecognized (invalid) type, or it might be corrupt.
-
- I then read the tape with dd to a file and run update off there: no
- difficulties whatsoever. Then I tried dd'ing it back to another tape
- and run update again: same error as above. So I don't think the tape
- is bad.
-
- What could be the cause of this behaviour?
- Am I likely to encounter it every time I need to use update?
- What is it that update does that demands more of a tape than dd &c?
- Is it possible that HP puts different firmware in OEM version
- of the drive so that it doesn't work properly with the 9k series?
- Something else I've overlooked?
