- It no longer makes any sense to buy computer systems
- hardware from Sun, HP or Next for new applications. Very
- shortly it will be possible buy the Sun OS, the Next OS,
- Windows NT and a variety of other UNIX systems that run
- on the 486/586 platform. Some of these are already
- available. Only a small performance difference, if any, exists
- between the reported speed of the 586 and traditional UNIX
- platforms. The 486 (and soon 586) "no-name" clones are
- very cheap, reliable and are custom-built exactly to the user's
- requirements within a day or two. Over a dozen cabinets and
- a vast array of peripheral cards are available. When running
- DOS and Windows, an infinite variety of usually
- inexpensive software is available. The large cost savings that
- can be accrued in buying "no-name" clones can be invested
- in HP peripherals (if you wish) such as the LaserJet that are
- still a very good value.
