- :Not to restart a flame war, but I've been thinking about this question,
- :which was asked about a month ago: should HP offer Windows/NT on its
- :workstations? The answer should be "Yes, but only under certain
- :circumstances".
-
- Oh, no! Bill Gates hits again!-)
-
- :2. For a low-cost workstation, UNIX can be overkill. It's like
- :driving a forklift to the grocery store: sure, you can get there, but
- :it's only necessary if you're planning to pick up a pallett of food.
- :Lots of users need something simpler than UNIX and something with
- :less overhead. Some customers need UNIX, so HP-UX should continue to
- :be provided for them.
-
- This is the problem. If you mean the new HP machine as a super-PC, this
- may be ok. If you think this system as a workstation, you are wrong.
-
- The damned NT in *** M O N O ***user!!!!
-
- Understand? No 'telnet' on the new HP?
- Got the picture?
-
- No more remote system administration!
- You are the user, and it's your look out!
-
- :3. UNIX applications cost more than Windows apps. For a $2000 system,
- :many users are unwilling to spend another $3000 for software. UNIX
- :comes with lots of utilities, but Windows includes a number of applications.
-
- Shut down "unix" prices? :-)
-
- :4. NT licenses will cost less than HP-UX licenses. NT support is always
- :going to be simpler/cheaper than HP-UX support (who wants to pay a lot
- :of money for support when the system only costs $2000?).
-
- Who wants? Anyone who *WORKS* with this system!
- Not who is playing with...
-
- Or get the Microsoft support (adjective field intetionally left blank).
-
- :1. The performance of DOS and Windows applications (because of the x86
- :emulation) just plain stunk. DEC's Alpha-based systems should be
- :able to overcome this limitation just thru raw system speed, but
- :it'll also cost a lot. A low-cost workstation may not be able to
- :run an x86 program fast enough. We'll have to see on this one.
-
- Are you sure? A friend of mine has seen a pre-release NT on a 486/33 with
- 20MB ram and a fast disk. He was disgusted. He tell me it's slower than
- Windows 3.1.
-
- Bye, Lanfranco
