  13. Greetings!  I have a somewhat unusual request.  I'm looking for a 
  14. VAX-11/750 compatible controller card for the CDC 9730-160 disk drive.  
  15. Allow me to explain in detail.
  16.  
  17. I'm a member of a computer club at the University of Arizona.  The UofA
  18. Hardware And Computing Knowledge Society (yes, UA HACKS -- but HACKS in
  19. the original, best sense of the word) is a club of students who want
  20. to get hands-on experience with computers.  
  21.  
  22. We learn about system management (VMS, Unix, etc), hardware maintenance, 
  23. and software development by rolling up our sleeves and getting our hands 
  24. dirty with old computers that have been donated to us.
  25.  
  26. Our club obtains unused and unwanted computer equipment and transforms each
  27. machine into a resource that provides members with valuable learning
  28. experiences.

  30. One of our current projects involves bringing up a VAX-11/750 under 4.3BSD
  31. Unix.  This isn't an impossible task--provided one has a boot disk and
  32. controller for one's 750.  We don't.  Yet.
  33.  
  34. Its not that we don't have disks--a professor in our Electrical and Computer 
  35. Engineering department generously donated a number of CDC drives to the
  36. club.  Instead, we're fresh out of VAX-compatible controllers for these disks.
  37.  
  38. We have enjoyed success using Emulex cards to connect several of these
  39. CDCs to our other machines.  An SC7000 is controlling a pair of 340M 
  40. drives in one of our 780s, while an SC780 controlls pair of 160M drives 
  41. in our second 780.  We even have an SC31 which we were hoping to use; 
  42. unfortunately, this card is very much broken.
