- Hello out there. I'm trying to decide which path to take in expanding our
- disk storage capacity. Right now we have 3 RF71's on a uVAX 3800 which
- haven't given us any trouble at all (in 2 years). But we need more space.
-
- Anyone have any experience or opinions on using a 3rd party configuration?
- The one I am considering would include a Toshiba Polaris series 1.2GB SCSI drive
- in combination with a CMD Technology CDI-4000 SCSI to DSSI adapter, mounted
- in a single (611) or dual (520) desktop enclosure cabinet.
- The sales literature claims that this configuration is about 38% faster than
- an RF71 and slightly faster than an RF72 (with larger capacity). I noticed
- that the Toshiba drive uses RLL encoding, which concerns me a little.
- I seem to remember from my PC days that the RLL drives tended to crash a
- bit more often. Of course, that was with MSDOS (messy-dos). But, I still
- feel a little leary about RLL. Anyone know what encoding method the RF71
- and RF72 use?
-
- Thanks for the help........ john
