- There's a lot of confusion going on here. So let me clarify some topics:
-
- The DSP has its own 24Bit databus for local memory. On the Falcon, the DSP has
- 32 K-Words of 0 waitstate S-RAM. One word is 24 bit (i.e. 3 byte) giving
- 96KByte local memory.
-
- The DSP does communicate with the rest of the world (including 68K bus)
- through serial interfaces. The serialinterface to the 68K bus is a full
- duplex ~1Mbit/s interface, as is the communication with the external
- dsp port (wich howewer is multiplexed into 8 slower channels).
- Just a comment to this: As long as the data rate the DSP uses to 'fetch' data
- from the 'real world' (external port) is the same (or less than) the datarate
- between the DSP<->CPU/memmory, there is realy no reason to complain!
-
- The 'prosessor direct slot' (PDS) intended for hardware PC emulators and
- the like, is a 68000 buss (16D/24A) with som extra controlsignals (interupt
- and buss artbitration).
-
- I do not know if the CPU<->memory databus is 16 bit or 32 bit. But given the
- benchmarks that rates the falcon to >450% i would guess it is 32Bit wide!
- Surely the addressbus is 24 bit!
-
- The builtin 16bit sound subsystem does not use the DSP. It CAN use it but it
- doesn't have to. Direct to disk recording and playback can (and will) be done
- with only the CODEC and the SDMA involved!
- HOWEWER, when requiering more than 2 simultainious channels, you will have to
- add external AD/DA converters to the DSP's external port. Only then you
- HAVE to use the DSP for direct to/from disk recording/playback!
