- Bob, play fair. The 3u has many cards available for it, in highly
- specialised fields, like instrumentation, data aquisition, etc, etc. ot
- to mention at least one colour board in North America, who knows how
- many in Europe. You also don't know how many specialised lab or research
- applications specifically writen for the STe are in use around the
- world, where VME cage systems are not a financial option for peoples
- budget. The old ST World used to do articles on people using ST's for
- research aplications in the UK, while STart was running covers of people
- using their ST to managge a lemonade stand.
- What you really mean is how many "Joe six pack'ers" have found
- usefule VME cards for their mega STe's. The answer is obviously, not
- very many. However, anyone who had done their homework would know the
- cost of p[roducing a VME card is fairly high. Why no one has seen fit to
- write drivers for some existing VME product is obvious to anyone looking
- at the North American market. Perhaps somone in Germany knows of a
- company who produced a commercial product based on the VME bus.
- But calling VME non standard, is rediculous. VME is widely used for
- highly professional applications, which would make you wonder why Atari
- thought it would be a good bus for their machine. I'd guess, again, they
- were influenced by someone in Europe, where it would make sense. Over
- here, all it did was lost us the benifit of digidesign's Soundtools, as
- they didn't feel sales warrented building a completely new card for the
- Mega STe.
-
- However, I do completely agree with your next post about corporate
- presidents not making official announcements. But then, you have also
- had a case where it wasn't a good idea to take a countries vice
- president's statements too seriously. Maybe it's a new trend.
